After graduation, I had all the school I could take! I really wanted to learn how to lay brick, block, and stone. I’d been a mason’s helper since my sophomore year in high school where I had worked after school and during the summer. The local masonry contractor I had been working for promised he would teach me to be a mason. As is usually the case for helpers, he never followed up on his promise. I wanted to learn how to lay brick, block, and stone! The sad fact is that most mason’s helpers are not taught how to lay brick, block, or stone!
After four years of being a mason’s helper, it was clear that my boss was never going to teach me to be a mason. Why? Because mason’s helpers are also in high demand, and masons who are over 40 years old often do not want to teach a younger person who might later take their job.

What does one need to do to become a mason? I was running into one roadblock after another. It seemed like it was easier to get a job in the secret service than to learn to be a mason!
